Emotions ran high in court as the misdemeanor theft case of two Palm Beach Gardens residents accused of absconding with pet ducks got under way. Blain Aymond wiped away tears, comforted by her husband, Robert. The Aymonds are contesting misdemeanor charges of petit theft, accused of hiring someone to trap several ducks at a pond in their neighbourhood and having the animals euthanized.
Many of the Aymonds' neighbours in the Frenchman's Landing community also were in the courtroom, hoping to see the couple convicted. "We were the ones who went down to (the shelter)," said one neighbour. "We were prepared to bring our ducks back. And when the (shelter) CEO told us they had been euthanized, we fell to the ground, just crying."
Prosecutors played Mrs. Aymond's tearful statement to a detective during Monday's court proceedings. "I can't believe no one from the (homeowner's) board even came to look at our yard," she said on the recording.
Between the noise and the poop, the Aymonds claim the ducks made their lives miserable. They say removing them became a necessity. The case stretched over the expected day long schedule and the judge will resume the hearing on Wednesday.
