Cat trapped in shipping container survives for weeks

A cat, trapped for weeks without food or water, travelled across the US in a shipping container and ended up in southeast Portland. The owner of the shipping trailer says the cat must have wandered in when it was parked on the East Coast. The animal was stuck inside for 16 days with no food or water.

When the cargo finally arrived at a Portland warehouse, the cat got out, but hid from anyone who tried to get too close. Indigo Rescue of Portland placed water and food all around the warehouse in hopes of luring out the cat. It didn’t work for 10 days.

Finally, on Thursday morning, animal rescue workers managed to corner the extremely skittish animal. Rescuers named the cat Transit and took him to the vet. He was given antibiotics, along with fluids under his skin to deal with dehydration. He also either has an eye infection or is blind.

The cat is neutered, but Heather Hines with Indigo Rescue says it’s not clear if he is feral or partially feral. They are continuing to care for Transit. “For a cat to survive for that period of time with those extreme temperatures and no food or water is a testament to the will of survival of the cat,” Hines said.
