Hit-and-run driver flees scene on roof of passing car

A 24-year-old Milwaukee man faces multiple charges after getting involved in a crash, allegedly fleeing the scene, riding on the roof of a car, and being arrested at gunpoint. The entire incident began at around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. That's when Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputies and officers from the River Hills Bayside police departments responded to a two-car crash on northbound I-43 near Bradley Road.

One of the vehicles involved in the crash was the 24-year-old man who witnesses say stumbled from his vehicle and into traffic near Brown Deer Road. When a driver, now identified as Bridgette Benavides, slowed to avoid hitting the man, the man grabbed the passenger side of the vehicle and attempted to enter it. The driver of the car keep on moving.



The man jumped onto the roof of the car and held onto the luggage rack; the entire time trying to get into the vehicle by kicking and punching the sunroof. While travelling at full freeway speed, the man was eventually able to break a small window by the rear passenger door. A River Hills police officer stopped the vehicle near Mequon Road, ordered the 24-year-old man off the vehicle at gunpoint, and arrested him with help from Bayside officer.

Milwaukee County deputies transported the man to Froedtert Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries from the initial crash. They also look a blood sample to test for blood alcohol content. The man faces charges of reckless driving, hit-and-run misdemeanor, operating while intoxicated, criminal damage to property and felony recklessly endangering safety.
