Indian deputy police chief on night ghost hunt

The deputy police chief of the Indian state of Karnataka has been ghost-hunting in the state's supreme court building after all his constables were scared away.

Officers have for two weeks reused to work night shifts in the Karnataka High Court, saying they were afraid of ghosts. Deputy Commissioner of Police Kumara Swami entered the court at about midnight on Wednesday night and spent two hours in the old building and the surrounding park.

"I went to the very spot where our police constables said I shouldn't. I sat there for 15 minutes all by myself in the hope that the ghost would come and talk to me, but it didn't," he said in an interview.

One of the first to spot the ghost was a woman, who lived on the premises of the court. One night, she said, she saw a woman clad in white, wailing and demanding "justice," she was followed by a child.

The next person to see a ghost was the building's senior officer. He said that someone pushed him during his night shift, and he saw a man with a long beard. When the policeman snarled at him for being rude, the ghost disappeared.

Rumours that the building was haunted spread quickly and police officers began refusing night duties. Swami could do nothing but go to the court building at night to prove there were no ghosts there. "I suspect these rumors have been spread by some miscreants who want to use the Cubbon park premises for its illegal activities. I want to put an end to that," Swami said.
