Man told he is sleeping 'wrong' after breaking three beds

An 18-stone man was told he is sleeping "in the wrong way "after breaking three beds in the same number of years. Ian Pike, 44, and his wife Susan first bought £900 bed from Benson for Beds in Croydon in August 2007. Within six months the mattress was wrecked after it 'collapsed in on itself' and Mr Pike was given a new one for free as it was under warranty.

But just eight months later the bed collapsed again and Mr Pike returned it for a second time - only to be given a new one, but charged a £50 fee as it was no longer under its first year warranty. After the bed once again gave way, Mr Pike returned to the store "fuming" telling staff he wanted a 'proper bed'. But when he questioned workers at the shop he says one of the members of staff asked him to demonstrate 'how he slept on the mattress'. When he hopped on a bed to demonstrate he says he was told "You're sleeping on it the wrong way".

Mr Pike said: "It’s getting ridiculous. I'm an 18-stone geezer so it needs to be a big bed. I couldn't believe it when they even told me I was lying on it the wrong way - how many ways are there to lie on a bed? It's more than three years now and I still don't own a proper bed and am always waiting for it to collapse on me again."

A spokesman for Benson for Beds said it apologised for "any inconvenience caused" and said it would replace the mattress again and had scrapped the warranty charge. He said: "I have spoken to the customer services manager who would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. There is a replacement mattress currently on order and we are awaiting the delivery from the manufacturer before delivering to Mr Pike. As a gesture of goodwill, his warranty charge of £75 for this replacement will be waivered and also a previous warranty charge of £50 will be refunded."
