Hospital releases embarrassing rap song about cleaning hands

An NHS hospital has launched a cringeworthy initiative to improve cleanliness – a rap song about hand washing complete with its own dance routine. Bosses at Milton Keynes Hospital, Bucks., have come up with the ‘Clean Hands Rap’ to help doctors and nurses learn proper hand washing technique. The song – which includes the lyrics ”Now to clean between your fingers, Just in case the bad bug lingers” – also has its own video with nurses dressed in ‘hip hop’ style clothing.

Nurse Jenny Brooks, who is in charge of infection prevention and control at Milton Keynes Primary Care Trust, believes the video is an effective training tool. She said: ”We’re all aware of the importance of hand hygiene, but this is a new way of reinforcing the message and reminding people that it’s not how often, but how well you clean your hands.



”It’s a serious message, delivered in a humorous, memorable way and hopefully one that will be useful to a wide audience, particularly for staff who speak English as a second language. We came up with the lyrics ourselves and just set them to music.”

The video will now be played across hospital waiting rooms where patients and staff will be able to read the subtitles and learn about hand washing. The ‘Clean Hands Rap’ was developed by the The Community Health Services’ Infection Prevention and Control team. Milton Keynes Primary Care Trust is also selling the song for £25, as part of a five-minute education DVD.
