Firefighters had to rescue a horse and its groom after it kicked its way out of a horse box and into the front cab of the vehicle. The two-year-old colt was trapped in the cab after the incident on the northbound carriageway of the A23 near Bolney, West Sussex on Friday.
The groom, who was in his 30s, was kicked in the head by the horse and had to be pulled free from the cab. He was taken to hospital by ambulance with a suspected head injury.
The horse was sedated by a vet while firefighters from Crawley and West Sussex Fire and Rescue technical rescue unit cut away the back of the cab to free the animal. The horse showed no sign of serious injury after the two-hour rescue.
The A23 was temporarily closed because of fears the horse would break free and bolt across the carriageway.
