Woman plays squawks through megaphone to get parrot back home

A woman has resorted to playing recorded bird noises through a megaphone in an attempt to coax back her missing pet parrot. Lyn Heathcote-Bate lost five-year-old Lennon, a green Amazon parrot, at a charity fun day, in Shipley, on Sunday, September 12. Despite having his wings clipped, the parrot flew up into a tree and has not been seen since.

An unconfirmed sighting was reported three days later by a fisherman at Mapperley Reservoir. Now, she is spending every spare hour at the reservoir playing recorded sounds, familiar to Lennon, which include the squawks of a cockatoo, through a megaphone in a desperate bid for him to return.



Lyn, of Burton, said: "I'm doing anything I can to get him back. I thought if I played sounds which were familiar to him then he would return. Parrots don't usually fly very far so he has to be around that area." She has also distributed fliers to households nearby and appealed to anglers at the reservoir for sightings.

Lyn's worst fear is Lennon might weaken and fall into the reservoir – or fall victim to a predator. But she said there are plenty of berries on trees for him to feed on. "He should be able to survive while the weather is relatively mild," she said. "He may also venture into gardens – especially if they contain well-stocked bird tables."
